Flow packing, also known as flow wrapping, is a packaging method in which a product is wrapped in a continuous flow of film. The film is wrapped around the product and sealed (airtight) at both ends. This packaging technique is ideal for food products such as sandwiches, wraps, vegetables, sweets, meat, cold cuts and dairy products because it provides effective protection against external influences such as air, moisture and bacteria.

How does flowpacking work?

In flowpacking, a food item is passed through a machine on a conveyor belt, where it is introduced into a film. The film is then sealed at the edges and ends, creating an (air) tight package. Different types of films are available depending on the requirements for the product, such as barrier films for longer shelf life or recyclable films for environmentally friendly packaging.

The technique can be applied to both individual products and larger multi-unit packages. This makes flowpacking a versatile packaging solution that meets various needs in the food industry.

Different types of flowpacking

HFFS flowpacking

HFFS stands for Horizontal Form-Fill-Seal.
Horizontal flow packing (HFFS) involves packaging the product horizontally. This is ideal for fragile foods such as cookies, sandwiches and delicate pastries. The product is placed on the film, then the package is formed, filled and sealed at the sides and ends. This type of flowpacking offers excellent protection and presentation capabilities.

VFFS flowpacking

VFFS stands for Vertical Form-Fill-Seal. Vertical flow packing is mainly used for products that can be easily poured into a package, such as chips, nuts or powders. In this method, the film is filled vertically with the product, then the top and bottom of the package are sealed. This is a fast and efficient method of packaging for high throughput products.

MAP Flow packing

MAP stands for Modified Atmosphere Packaging.
In MAP flowpacking, the package is filled with a modified gas mixture to extend the shelf life of the product. This is similar to MAP sealing, but applied within the flowpacking process. The gas mixture protects the product from oxidation and bacterial growth, which is ideal for fresh produce such as meat, fish and ready meals.

Peelable Flowpacks

Peelable flow packs are specially designed to be easy to open without reducing the freshness and safety of the product. This is especially useful for products that need to be consumed quickly, such as snacks and fresh fruit. Ease of use and quick access make these packs popular with consumers.

Recyclable Flowpacks

For customers who value sustainability, recyclable and compostable films are now available for flowpacking. These eco-friendly options offer the same benefits as traditional films, but with a lower environmental impact. This makes it an attractive choice for companies looking to reduce their carbon footprint.

The benefits of flowpacking

Flow packs can be printed with brand logos and product information, which also contributes to a professional and attractive presentation on the shelves. This helps increase product visibility and appeal, which can lead to increased sales.

Whether for single products, multipacks or fragile foods, flowpacking offers a solution for many products. The flexibility of the system allows packaging to be customized to the specific needs of the customer.

An additional advantage in the production process is that no trays and therefore no (tray) de-nester is needed, as the loose product goes directly into the film and is sealed.

With the emergence of recyclable and compostable films, flowpacking also offers a sustainable packaging solution. This allows companies to meet environmental and circular economy packaging goals without compromising on product protection or quality.

Flow packing is a very fast and efficient method of packaging, increasing productivity and reducing packaging costs. It is a continuous and automated packaging method, making it ideal for companies looking to process large quantities of food products.

The airtight seal of flow packs provides protection against external influences such as moisture, oxygen and bacteria. This extends shelf life and maintains product quality, which is important for both freshness and food safety.
